Lungworm
Lungworm can cause serious illness and can be fatal. Dogs may swallow infected slugs or snails while eating grass or drinking outside. Young, inquisitive dogs can be especially difficult to keep away from things they should not eat. Our countryside grounds receive visits from wildlife; we remove faeces at least daily and whenever it is seen, but no outdoor setting is free of parasite risk.
Ask your vet to confirm that your dog’s worming programme covers lungworm. Seek veterinary help promptly for concerning changes, including coughing, breathing difficulties, unexplained bruising or bleeding, weight loss, seizures or collapse. Read PDSA’s veterinary lungworm guidance.
Roundworm & tapeworm
Roundworms can resemble spaghetti, although they are not always visible. Puppies may acquire them from their mother; other dogs can pick them up from contaminated material. Signs can include vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, poor growth or a swollen belly. Tapeworm segments may look like grains of rice in faeces or around the bottom. Scooting, licking the bottom and weight loss can occur. Dogs commonly acquire tapeworm by swallowing infected fleas, or by eating infected prey or raw meat.
Some dogs show few outward signs. Ask your vet about a suitable worming and flea-control programme, and arrange an appointment if your dog seems unwell. Read PDSA’s veterinary worm guidance.

Our published monthly fun facts give a sense of daily life: around 1,000 poo bags, 200 tennis balls, 18 blue rolls, 45 litres of cleaning solution, 500ml of antibacterial hand gel and 24 packs of baby wipes. We have described an average of 500 dog visits each month and two new clients each week. These are an illustration of life at Mucky Pupz, rather than a live attendance count.
Why does dog grooming cost more than a haircut? A full-body groom needs specialist scissors, coat-specific combs and brushes, several dryers, towels and hygiene supplies. Dirt and matting take time to manage carefully. Nervous dogs may need a slower pace or more than one session. Handling a moving dog safely, cleaning around eyes and ears, trimming nails and caring for the whole coat all add to the work involved. We plan grooming around each dog’s comfort and needs.
